Overview
Kansas NSF EPSCoR is a statewide research and workforce development initiative that expands Kansas’ capacity for innovation by investing in scientific discovery, talent development, and strategic partnerships. Since 1992, the program has generated significant returns through research funding, faculty development, workforce training, and community-focused innovation, achieving a 2.3:1 return on investment. By aligning all major initiatives with Kansas state priorities, EPSCoR helps address critical challenges in resilience, economic growth, and workforce readiness while positioning Kansas as a leader in research-driven solutions.
Return on Investment
Kansas NSF EPSCoR has demonstrated a strong return on public investment by building long-term research capacity and growing the state’s talent pipeline. Since 1992, the program has secured $88.7 million in NSF EPSCoR Track-1 awards and invested more than $8.8 million in seed grants for innovative research and education projects. The program reports a 2.3-to-1 return on investment and has helped launch the careers of 177 early-career faculty members, supported 25 faculty hires across Kansas universities, and contributed to more than 1,487 research publications aligned with state needs. Workforce development impacts include research experiences for 831 college students, 121 Native scholars, and hundreds of students receiving data science training across Kansas institutions.
